Swine Flu and Three Thieves Wine by Ralph & Lahni de Amicis

Bird, Flu, Swine Flu, Mad Cow, the fear of pandemics is justified because they potentially change the entire make up of a society. Of all of these the plague, also known as the Black Death, is the most famous in western societies. Over one third of the population of Europe was decimated, but there were bright spots, communities that were spared. The glove makers saw the shadow the plague them pass by untouched. Why? Because they used lavender oil in the tanning of their hides and the anti-microbial affects killed the pathogens.

Lavender was a component in an important preventive which was known as the Three Thieves Wine. A few years ago three Napa wine makers came out with a jug named after this tradition, it wasn’t very good and I would have been happier if they’d stuck to the original recipe. What they made was just wine.

What was the Three Thieves Wine that fought the plague to a stop? It was raw, red wine, not aged or filtered, to which was added whole garlic gloves and lavender flowers. Tasty! This was at a time when people didn’t drink water; it wasn’t safe, unless it was mixed with wine. Weak wine, beer and tea from boiled water were what followed mother’s milk.

Garlic and lavender both are powerful healers, but when they are dissolved in the alcohol of wine they become more bio-available. Add to that the sanitizing affects of alcohol, the purifying affects of sulfur, found in the tannins from the skins and seeds, and the malic and citric acids cleansing abilities.

Then let’s throw in the tartaric acid and its great ability to clean mucous out of the body, and wines ability to cleanse is significant. Tartaric acid is found in the tart sheath that covers the seed. Years ago they didn’t remove the tartaric acid to prevent forming crystals in the bottom of the bottle.

Of course we have to add in the powerful anti-oxidants found in grapes, as well pine bark and other berries. The ability that wine has to break down the fatty bonds in plants like garlic and lavender, to make those nutrients more available, is used to break down old fats trapped in the body. These old, rancid fats are some of the most toxic materials the body has to deal with. That is why solvents like alcohol are so important to the body.

To get the most benefits you need to replace those old fats with fresh foods like fish, olive oil, nuts and root vegetables that specifically help feed the hormonal system. These fats also protect the body from invasion by pathogens, like bacteria, viruses and fungus.

There are good reasons why wine, garlic and lavender that long traditions of use in our world, and when they are used together they seem to have a synergy that makes the whole more powerful than the parts.
