Often a person’s underlying challenge is lack of confidence. We've learned to recognize this by their inability to even consider beneficial changes to their environment. Here is how to position so your surrounding promote confidence.
First, work facing the the door! It makes you feel confident and in charge. Don’t sit with your back to busy entrances like a quivering rabbit waiting to be pounced on by a wolf. Arrive to meetings early and take a good seat. Change your seat or move the chair if you don't feel confident in the one you've got. CEO's of successful companies directly face the door, the message they send is, whatever comes into their territory will be dealt with confidently.
Administrators often sit sideways to the door while the minions huddle in their cubicles like scared bunnies with their necks exposed. What are you telling yourself and the world by which seat you choose?
If you can't move your desk and you don’t want to be one of those trembling bunnies, what can you do? Buy a small counter top mirror and a tiger striped jacket. Place the mirror so that you can see the entrance behind you and hang the jacket on the back of the chair. When people come in they will see your eyes in the mirror and tiger stripes. That combination sends a very different message than your exposed back.
That mirror will also reduce typos and neck pain because you're not twisting around, taking your fingers off the keyboard every time someone enters your space. We often see a 30% increase in personal effectiveness and productivity for the price of a little mirror. That alone does a lot for your self-confidence and you probably look great in animal prints.
Next, place images in the room so you look either straight ahead, or up a little bit when you arrive. Confidence comes from standing straight, chin up and chest out. If the first thing that catches your attention is the overfilled trash can on the floor you will stoop as your eyes watch where your feet are going. The best spot to point your attention is chest height and just to the right of straight ahead. The more positive and mission focused the image is, the better.
Finally, whenever possible, face your chair or desk to the east, the direction of sunrise. This is especially great for sales. This lets the Earth’s electromagnetic current work most effectively with the body’s own fields to promote confidence. We find that sales performance normally improves with this simple improvement. Work is about solving problems and accomplishing missions and the more confident you feel the better.
