The Evolution of our Work
When Feng Shui first appeared in the United States Ralph was managing a factory, working with ergonomic engineering, completing his Master's degree in environmental design, making sculptures in steel and stone, and studying environmental health. The idea that Feng Shui and Western Geomancycould reveal more about the significance of design was irresistible.
He began studying it, then due to his background found himself speaking and consulting on the subject. It was about this time that Ralph and Lahni met, and in a few years they were lecturing together on the topic internationally. As much as the Feng Shui community wanted to drag the approach into a mystical system, Ralph kept insisting that while mysticism is an important part of FS, a great deal is simply very good, practical design, based on an intimate understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
Feng Shui's foundation comes from the same body of knowledge as Chinese medicine, and among some circles it is believed that only those trained in healing should pursue this. Ralph and Lahni are both Naturopathic Physicians, so even though their approach is very modern, it is also very authentic and effective.
This series of books grew out of the certificate program that they ran monthly for seven years at the Grand Hyatt in Philadelphia, overlooking Penn's landing. When they moved their offices to the west coast, part of their intention was to take a new approach with their work. They set out to move beyond the limitations of FS, and present their knowledge in an easy to understand and retain form, that helps people in their most demanding situations, the work place.
While this book series also addresses our life at work, a great deal of the material looks at ways that we can improve our lives through how we manage our homes. They continue to be helpful titles in part because they provide very real solutions for the problems that crop up in modern homes. They have a mystical side to them, just as human's do.
Or as Pierre Teihard de Chardin said, "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience".
